WATER MITE

The Water Mite is a flat disk like water bug. It is found on the surface of the water. It may also be found on the bottom of the water in the mud. The Water Mite can be either brown, black or pink. Water Mites eat plant or animal substances. Water Mites are slow moving through the water. There size ranges from 1-5mm.

WATER MITE

The Water Mite is very small and spider like. It has eight legs and is only 0.2mm wide. It comes in various colours, such as purple, pink, red, brown or black. The red ones are the most commonly known, since they are so easy to see. All Water Mites are predators. They feed on all kinds of larvae and other insects which are mostly smaller than them.

WATER SPIDER

Water spiders are found on the water surface and are very active predators. The water spider can grow up to 25mm long. When they go under the water they can take a bubble of air trapped around their hairs. The water spider eats small insects, small fish and tadpoles.

THE DRAGONFLY NYMPH

Dragonfly Nymphs are about 8mm X 11mm but are able to grow up to 10mm X 20 mm. Dragonflies are omnivorous (eat both animals and plants) but, usually only on special occasions they eat plants (eg. lack in food). Dragonfly Nymphs are the middle stage of their transformation into a dragonfly.

Dylan

ISOPOD

The Isopod can grow up to 12 mm. The Isopod has a distinctive head and no main body. They crawl slowly and feed on dead and decaying material. They are similar to the amphipods but have gills on their abdomen.

THE DRAGONFLY NYMPH

A Dragonfly Nymph has no back bone. They eat other pond insects. They can eat small fish and tadpoles. They can also eat each other if they really need too. Dragonfly Nymphs can grow up to 18mm x 49mm (1.8cm x 4.9cm). Dragonfly Nymphs can bite if they feel threatened.

THE DRAGONFLY NYMPH

The Dragonfly Nymph is a back-boneless macro invertebrate. The Dragonfly Nymph is a predator and feeds on other pond insects. They will also show signs of cannibalism and eat each other (only if they have to). Dragonfly Nymphs eat small fish and tadpoles too. The size of a Dragonfly Nymph is between 18mm and 49mm (1.8cm and 4.9cm). If held carelessly Dragonfly Nymphs will inflict a sharp bite. Dragonfly Nymphs are sometimes used as fishing bait.

HYDRA

The hydra is a small water bug that can grow up to 1 cm long. The hydra has 6 tentacles. The Hydra moves by gliding on foot, like a snail or just somersaulting. The body of the Hydra is made up of two layers of cells. The outside layer is called ectoderm and the inside layer is called the mesoglea. The Hydra can only lay one egg at a time.

DIVING BEETLES

There is a cavity under the Adult Diving Beetles wings that holds water so they can remain under water for long periods of time. Some of the foods that the Adult Diving Beetles eat are small fish, frogs, toads, tadpoles and larvae of other insects. The Adult Diving Beetle has yellow along its sides and on the bottom. Females have many grooves on their back wings. They all have smooth oval shaped backs and hairy paddle shaped legs. Adult diving Beetles live in pond lilies, Common Duck Weed, Common Reed, Green Algae, Long Leaf Pond Weed and Swamp Rose Mallow.

DIVING BEETLE (LARVAE)

Size: 6.35mm to 70mm long.

Description: Elongated body, threadlike antennae, sickle-shaped mouthparts, two filaments on the end of the abdomen, usually less than ½ of the abdomen, lined up with feathery gills.

Habitat: Various freshwater depending on species.

Food: Small aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates.

Fun Facts: Diving beetle larvae’s have gills, but the adults don’t.

I chose the Diving Beetle (larvae) because it looked interesting and their habits are fascinating.

Damselflies

Damselflies have slick bodies and a three pronged tail. They have an extendible jaw that folds up under the head, legs close behind their head.

Compound eyes made from little eyes give excellent vision.

They range in size from16-33mm.

Damselflies live on plants, among stones, leaf and litter on the bottom of ponds or in slow-flowing rivers.
